A Two-Way Conversation

With particularly difficult challenges, dogs may need some extra time to settle and prepare themselves for the trigger. This is probably exactly like what happens when I go to the optometrist and need to mentally prepare myself before the technician presses that intimidating device against my eyeball.

I am particularly sensitive about my eyes, and if the technician comes too quickly or before I am ready, I will flinch away — or think of defensive actions. If I have a moment to prepare myself, on the other hand, we can complete the examination without an unsettling display of fear or human aggression!

It can be very helpful, in some cases, to give the dog a way to indicate if he’s ready for the presentation of the trigger. I stumbled upon this concept while working to desensitize my Laevatein to gunfire, which had previously sent her into panic; together we developed a conversation in which she could indicate to me, by placing her chin fully on the mat, that she was ready for the trigger. I could then present the stimulus (a cap gun, at that point), mark her continued down on the mat, and reinforce.

If she did not put her chin on the mat, I simply waited for her to be ready. She was in complete control of whether or not the cap gun was fired.
